A consultation for the A303 Stonehenge tunnel scheme has now been launched.
The government is committed to improving the transport infrastructure to the South West, to allow what has been a frequently overlooked part of the country to develop further and boost economic growth.
This is one of the biggest infrastructure investments in the South West in generations and will improve the most direct route by upgrading one of eight single carriageway sections, which cause congestion and delay, impacting on the regional economy. The scheme is set to transform journey reliability, increase safety and improve connectivity, while protecting the environment.
Steve Brine said: "So many of my constituents, including my own family, use this stretch of road, not least for summer holidays, and my understanding is that the proposed tunnel through this World Heritage Site is widely supported, not only by local councils, but also other key stakeholders.
"Transport Minister Chris Grayling is, I know, continuing to push Highways England to deliver the scheme as soon as possible, by late 2019.
"I am also delighted with the commitment to upgrade the remaining sections of the A303 between the M3 and the M5 to dual carriageway, which will thankfully start with the Amesbury to Berwick Down scheme."
The consultation closes on 5th March 2017.
