Cancer Charities Roundtable

Steve Brine held his fourth roundtable session on cancer in London on Wednesday 28th November.

The Winchester & Chandler’s Ford MP, who is also the Cancer Minister, welcomed over 20 representatives from organisations dedicated to fighting all kinds of cancers, and was delighted at the superb contributions to the discussion.

Speaking after the meeting, he said: “I welcome the drive and support everyone displayed in this excellent roundtable meeting today, showing concrete support for our key ambition in the long-term plan to diagnose 75% of cancers at stage one or two. This will mean 55,000 more people in England every year surviving cancer for five years.”

The session covered a range of topics, and chief among them was how the Government can achieve the ambitions for cancer early diagnosis and survival in the NHS long-term plan. Cally Palmer, the NHS England National Cancer Director, opened the meeting with an update on the ambitions in the long-term plan.

The discussion then focussed on how the Government can achieve the early diagnosis and survival ambitions by 2028, how it can be made sure that they apply to all cancers, including the less survivable and harder to diagnose cancers, and how we can ensure that the NHS has the cancer workforce to deliver the ambitions.

Steve added: “I’d like to thank everyone in the meeting for their valuable contributions. They were incredibly helpful and such a constructive discussion amongst Britain’s leading cancer charities proves we are on the right track.”

My final column is perhaps more reflective than usual but I hope you will forgive me as I prepare to formally step down as Parliament is formally Dissolved ahead of the General Election on July 4. Fourteen years ago, in May 2010, I was first elected as our MP.
