Members of Parliament from across the House of Commons questioned government plans around a return to fracking during an opposition day debate.
Brought forward by the Labour Party, the debate sought to end the conversation on fracking by making permanent the current pause on the energy source.
Winchester and Chandler's Ford's MP, Steve Brine, noted the large opposition to fracking in his Winchester constituency where he doesn't "believe for a minute my constituents would give consent to fracking in our area."
The Hampshire MP went on to ask the Minister at the dispatch box, Jacob Rees-Mogg, "The Secretary of State says local people will have a veto over this, can he just be clear the planning inspectorate will not have a veto over local people?"
The BEIS Minister responded to say; "Let me be absolutely clear, local communities will have a veto. If it does not get local consent then, and that will be consulted on as to what local consent forms be, that could be as my Honourable Friend from Sussex asked, it may be by local referendum. That's what the consultation will be about, but if local consent is withheld, that is a veto, and it won't be overruled by national government."
