Winchester Cathedral held a special service to mark one hundred years since the start of The Great War on Sunday 22nd June.

The Hampshire County Service was attended by hundreds of people from across the county, including Winchester MP Steve Brine, and heard lessons from a number of dignitaries, including Lord-Lieutenant of Hampshire, Dame Mary Fagan, Commander Land Forces, Lieutenant General Sir Nicholas Carter as well as a blessing from the Bishop of Winchester, Tim Dakin.

Representatives from a number of schools and colleges were also in attendance, while members of the Hampshire County Youth Band Dectet played a programme of music synonymous with the First World War.

Speaking afterwards, Steve Brine said: "This was a big service and a very moving one, especially with the piper and the young cadets at the end. It was good to see so many of my parliamentary colleagues there and a reminder that Winchester Cathedral is, in so many ways, the heart of the county when it comes to these big civic occasions.

"This centenary has been very poignant for me so far and a constant reminder that, for all the challenges of modern life, how lucky we are to live in freedom and relative peace today."
