Winchester MP Steve Brine has called for decisive action at a notorious accident black-spot after another incident took place this week (Mon 24 June) at the A33/London Road junction in Headbourne Worthy.
Earlier this month he took the new Transport Portfolio Holder at Hampshire County Council (Cllr Sean Woodward) to visit the site so he could see for himself the danger faced by every day by constituents and he will now chair a meeting of parish, city and county councillors – as well as Hampshire Police - to try and force a way forward.
Fears over the junction, which has seen numerous accidents, in recent months and years have been raised with Mr Brine by constituents; including this week after the latest accident there. An air ambulance was called on Monday afternoon and three people were treated for minor injuries after a Ford Fiesta and a Mazda crashed into each other just before 1.30pm near the junction with London Road. The road was closed in both directions whilst the air ambulance landed.
Steve Brine says; "I live not far from this junction so my family and I use it every day and we see for ourselves, not just the accidents but the near-misses that are not recorded. Local people know this spot is dangerous and I believe they want action to make it safer, not just campaigns shooting off in all directions.
"That is why at the request of the parish council I am bringing together local councillors, from all parties, at the meeting on 1st July to see what is on the table from the county council already and to try and raise the ambition for the safety work that is so obviously needed here. Cost will be an issue of course, and HCC have already said that, which is why we need to work together to demand action and force it through. Local people want us to work together on this one and I will see that we do."
Mr Brine will chair a meeting on Monday 1st July to be attended by Headbourne Worthy City Councillor and leader of Winchester City Council, Keith Wood, parish and county councillors as well as the Chief Inspector of Winchester Police.
