Around 39million cycle-rail journeys are now made a year, a 40% rise since 2009. Train companies, Network Rail and the Department for Transport (DfT) have helped drive and respond to increased demand by investing in more and improved cycling facilities across the network. The cross-industry Cycle Rail Working Group is currently implementing more than £25millon in schemes, which will take the total number of cycle spaces to almost 70,000 by 2015 and see more than 30 cycle hubs established.
Now in their ninth year, the Association of Train Operating Companies (ATOC) National Cycle Rail Awards recognise progress by the rail industry and associated organisations in encouraging and developing integrated cycle-rail travel. The awards, which are judged in partnership with cycling stakeholders and campaign groups, play a key role in increasing cycle access to the railways by improving communication and the spread of best practice.
This year's winners included South West Trains, whose efforts have resulted in a significant increase in cycling and are now responsible for around 25% of Britain's cycle-rail access.
Michael Roberts, ATOC Chief Executive and Director General of the Rail Delivery Group, said: "This year saw the launch of the government's door to door strategy, and the rail industry is committed to playing a key part in delivering that vision.
"We have made great strides in not only providing more and better cycling facilities at stations, but also in encouraging greater numbers of passengers to combine cycle and rail travel."
Steve Brine said: "As a member of the All-Party Cycling Group and a regular rail user myself, I was so pleased to be here tonight. And of course, as a South West Trains customer, I am delighted at their success.
"Integration of cycle and rail is so important as we seek to take cycling to the next level, and this is a key part of keeping the momentum going."
Transport Minister Stephen Hammond said: "Used in combination, bike and rail offers one of the most environmentally friendly forms of travel so it is important to give people the choice to travel this way. That's why working together with the train companies, Network Rail and TfL we're investing more than £25 million to improve cycle facilities at around 350 stations across the network."
