Steve meets education chief

Steve Brine met up with Hampshire Education Chief, Cllr Stephen Reid (Friday 11th January) as they discussed the performance of primary and secondary schools across the MPs constituency.

Along with Director of Children’s Services, Steve Crocker, they discussed the latest results of all schools in the area which have higher educational outcomes than the national average from Early Years all the way through to GCSE.

All Primary schools barring one are rated Good or Outstanding  and all Secondary schools perform above the national averages for basics, attainment and progress.

Cllr Stephen Reid said: “It was great to sit down with Steve and have this very detailed session. He really knows his schools, and is clearly very engaged with them. We hear this fed back to us from head teachers as well.”

Steve Brine MP added; “This was a really value session and I am grateful to Cllr Reid and his team for the chance to examine systematically local performance. As a parent of two at primary school myself, I know all too well the faith we place in the state system and how important education provided is to their future.

“I am acutely aware of the unfairness of the current funding formula meaning that children in Hampshire receive less per head than elsewhere in the country, and continue to press this inside Government. Meetings like this, focused on the facts, are crucial in this regard and are useful additions to what I get from the regular visits I make to schools in my constituency.”

Mr Brine added that he had already met with the Schools Minister to discuss some of the issues raised at the meeting with HCC.

Hampshire Chronicle column - Farewell

Thursday, 30 May, 2024
My final column is perhaps more reflective than usual but I hope you will forgive me as I prepare to formally step down as Parliament is formally Dissolved ahead of the General Election on July 4. Fourteen years ago, in May 2010, I was first elected as our MP.
