Steve Brine met representatives from Winchester Action on Climate Change (WinACC) on Wednesday 17th June, as a mass lobby of Parliament took place to raise awareness of the impact of climate change.
Representatives from several local organisations, including WinACC and CAFOD attended Parliament discuss climate change issues with their representatives.
Key topics which came up included how the government can make the most of the Paris Conference this December, and the pledge to seek a legally binding global climate deal limiting global temperature rises to below 2 degrees.
Speaking afterwards, Steve said: "It was a real pleasure to meet representatives from WinACC again, and I completely agree that the Government must do all it can to raise the issue of climate change on a global level.
"The UK already takes a leading role on the world stage and is working towards a binding global deal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and limit climate change to manageable levels. The Government worked to achieve agreement within Europe on a historic deal to cut greenhouse gas emissions and EU countries agreed a new 2030 energy and climate policy framework, including a domestic emissions reduction target of at least 40%.
"The Government also set up the International Climate Fund to provide £3.87 billion between 2011 and 2015 to help the world's poorest adapt to climate change and promote cleaner, greener economic growth, and it was good to be able to discuss these matters in the House today."
WinACC Chair, Tony Stoller, added: "We were heartened by the response from our two MPs, who are as keen on this as we are."
"They are very supportive of all the efforts that are being made to make sure we get a legally binding deal in Paris. So we asked them to urge our Government to take the lead in Paris to press all the nations to protect us from the potentially catastrophic effects of global warming."
