Steve Brine chatting to students

Winchester and Chandler’s Ford MP, Steve Brine, visited Sparsholt College to hear from the Principal and senior staff about how they, and their students, have dealt with the past year.

As the college looks towards their 125th anniversary, Principal Julie Milburn talk Steve through the future of this Hampshire institution and how they plan to face challenges ahead including current capital funding challenges.

The MP heard about the bright future of the college’s higher education, with a record 500 higher education students on roll from this September.

Mr Brine also had the opportunity to see an exciting new facility on the college campus at the new health and well-being space, which is aimed towards supporting vulnerable students with safeguarding and mental health concerns.

Speaking after his visit Steve said; “It was fantastic to get back to Sparsholt College, it’s been far too long since I was on the campus and my trip was made even better by meeting in-person with Julie at last.

“I was really impressed by the ambition they have for this fantastic academic institution but there are big issues looming and I have some homework to take back to Westminster with me. We hope to bring the new FE Minister to Sparsholt soon.

“The new well-being space is really smart and the support Sparsholt are offering their students is hugely impressive.”

Steve spent time chatting with four students in the new well-being facility about their experience of the pandemic and hopes for their future.

Hampshire Chronicle column - Farewell

Thursday, 30 May, 2024
My final column is perhaps more reflective than usual but I hope you will forgive me as I prepare to formally step down as Parliament is formally Dissolved ahead of the General Election on July 4. Fourteen years ago, in May 2010, I was first elected as our MP.
