The two organisations are to embark on a strategic partnership where WSC will be providing important public engagement for the University. This is a significant new phase in their relationship and hugely important for both organisations.
It recognises the importance UoS is placing in public engagement and promoting Science, Technology, Engineering, and Maths (STEM). Recently, WSC has been creating large hands-on exhibits for the University to communicate their research to the general public and raise awareness of our STEM sector, the UK's role in Scientific Research and encourage young people to choose STEM for their career and perhaps study at a local university.
The partnership was launched at a special event on Friday 22 September at WSC attended by key figures from across the area and from both organisations, including University of Southampton Vice Chancellor Sir Christopher Snowden.
Local MP Steve Brine was there and said; "We hear so much about the importance of STEM subjects to our economy and if this can help further their understanding and a love of the sciences among young people, it will be very worthwhile.
"Given my role at the Department of Health as Public Health Minister, I was particularly interested in the work WSC are doing around antimicrobial resistance (AMR) which we know presents one of the greatest threats to humankind today. I look forward to working with them some more and will certainly brief my officials at PHE and DH about this new partnership."
