Shadow Cabinet member visits Winchester with Steve Brine to talk recycling and green issues.

Prospective Winchester MP Steve Brine welcomed a leading member of David Cameron’s team to Winchester today (Thursday Jan 28 2010).

Nick Herbert MP, who is Shadow Minister for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA), and MP for Arundel and South Downs, briefly visited Emmaus Hampshire before taking a tour of Hampshire County Council’s Household Recycling Facility at Bar End.

Centres such as Bar End, there are 24 across the county, account for around 30% of total waste recycled in Hampshire.  They are part of a network of disposal facilities in providing an integrated solution to waste.  Hampshire’s current overall recycling rate is 43%, with 90% of waste diverted from landfill – more than any other UK authority!

Mr Herbert heard all about the recycling facilities on offer and chatted with staff and customers during the visit and congratulated Conservative-led Hampshire for leading the way among UK council’s on recycling and avoiding landfill.

He was also keen to outline Conservative plans for a ‘Green Deal’ if they are elected this year.  Conservative believe, he said, that instead of punishing the public, we should give people incentives to do the right thing.  The party has proposed the RecycleBank Scheme, which is being trialed by Windsor & Maidenhead Council.

As part of radical plans to move Britain to a low carbon economy, Conservatives have unveiled a scheme that will give every household in Winchester the chance to save money on their heating bills and help reduce our collective CO2 emissions.  Trusted retailers like Marks & Spencer, as well as energy suppliers, social enterprises, local authorities and local businesses, would be entitled to provide energy efficiency improvements to people’s homes using this new allowance and other grants.
