Steve was a sponsor of Alun Cairns' Bill which seeks to require disclosure of caller line identification by non-domestic callers, and ensure that telephone providers may not make a charge for providing caller line identification.
Opening the Bill, Mr Cairns said: "Requiring all non-domestic callers to display their numbers unless they have good reason not to do so... will help... millions across the country to take action against those who call against the rules. In the Bill, I propose that Ofcom be required to consider applications for exemptions."
Speaking afterwards, Steve Brine said: "The issues surrounding nuisance calls are many and varied, but we are clear that the general rule should be that an organisation, whether public or private, should have to disclose their number when they call, unless there is a good reason why they should not do so.
"Clearly, the police and domestic violence charities, are good exceptions, but they should indeed be seen very much as the exception rather than the general rule."
A cross-party group of MPs including Mike Crockart, Fiona Bruce, Dr Julian Huppert, Steve Rotheram, Bob Stewart, Sir Andrew Stunell, Martin Vickers, Mr Mike Weir and Simon Wright all agreed to sponsor the Bill, which will be read a second time in the House on Friday 28th February 2014.
The Bill comes just days after Steve and the All-Party Group on Nuisance Calls released a report with a number of hard-hitting recommendations to the comms industry.
