Nuisance calls under spotlight

A cross-party group of MPs is looking at the blight of nuisance calls through a parliamentary inquiry.

Winchester & Chandler's Ford MP Steve Brine, who is a member of the All-Party Group, is backing the inquiry on behalf of constituents who have raised the issue with him locally.

The inquiry seeks to understand the scale and impact of the problem on consumers and to assess the effectiveness of the current regulatory regime. It also aims to produce, via a report which will be launched on 30th October, how complaints are handled and ultimately how consumers could be empowered and better protected.

A series of recommendations will be made ahead of a Private Members' Bill being introduced next month by co-chair of the group, Edinburgh West MP Mike Crockart.

Steve, who sat as part of the inquiry panel which heard evidence from Which?, CAB, Ofcom and numerous telecoms providers, said the problem has reached levels where it was no longer acceptable to wait for action.

"Nuisance calls are an irritant to many but for some people, usually elderly or vulnerable groups as we heard in evidence from the CAB, they can wreck lives because they are often part of sophisticated scams which leave people crippled with debts they can't pay back.

"The whole issue is fiendishly complicated and technical, often involving calls that originate from outside UK jurisdiction, which is why we're taking such a detailed look at the problem and taking sound evidence from across the industry and consumer groups.

We will be working closely with Ministers at the DCMS to see if this work can inform a series of changes to the regulatory regime and ultimately the law."

Paul Covill, of Fordington Road, was one of those who met with Steve on Friday 11th October, to discuss the issue. He said:"I know residents are backing Steve 100% with his efforts, as problems surrounding incessant nuisance calls can be very serious.

"Often people are awaiting a serious call, or some personal news, and any action that can be taken to reduce and wipe out the problem will be extremely welcome."

Research commissioned by Citizens Advice and carried out by Ipsos Mori found that 72% of people had received a cold call! text or email in the last 12 months. More than six in ten British adults say they have received unwanted contact in that time for miss old Payment Protection Insurance, known as PPI.
