Reflections on Conference and England Expects

The Conservative Party Conference was held earlier this week in Birmingham, and contained a number of positive announcements.

Steve Brine has had a lot of feedback from constituents across Winchester & Chandler's Ford over the past few days, and said one highlight for him had been the eye-catching proposals on tax.

He said: "It was really great to vote to raise the tax-free personal allowance to £10,500 during this Parliament. If we are re-elected next year, it will be even better to take one million more of the lowest paid out of income tax as we raise that figure to £12,500.

"In addition, the 40p tax rate was never meant to catch many of middle income earners it now engulfs. So we will raise the threshold at which people pay the 40p rate from £41,900 to £50,000. This will bring fairness back to the tax system."

It was also announced that a future Conservative government would abolish altogether the current 55% tax levied on pension pots passed to children when the pension-holder dies, alongside further confirmation that only a Conservative government will deliver the in/out referendum local people have been crying out for.

Steve added: "Health remains my political priority and it seems the Prime Minister agrees. We will protect the NHS budget for the lifetime of the next Parliament if David Cameron is re-elected, and I know this has gone down extremely well locally.

"Since my election in 2010 I have tried hard to honour my promise to be a hard-working constituency MP. I have also been an active backbench MP in Parliament working as part of a Government which, in spite of the mistakes it has made and the tough decisions it has had to take, is I believe securing a better future for Britain.

As I said to Meridian TV after David Cameron's speech, this country cannot sleep walk towards a Labour Government with Ed Miliband in No.10. The election next year is a straight choice between David Cameron or Mr Miliband, and now the main party conference season is over, it could not be clearer what a crossroads this country stands at."

Steve Brine has also had a huge amount of correspondence on 'English votes for English laws, the so-called West Lothian Question. You can read his latest Hampshire Chronicle column here.
