The Conservatives have launched new plans to tighten the bail laws and ensure public safety is put first.

Prospective Winchester MP, Steve Brine, has welcomed plans from the Shadow Justice Secretary, Nick Herbert, to tighten the bail laws and ensure public safety is put first.

He stressed, "The current system is not working - bail is too easily granted, frequently breached and improperly enforced."

The Conservatives have today announced proposals to reform two crucial areas of bail law: the decision to bail defendants and the enforcement of conditions when a suspect is bailed.

The former will be tightened up with measures including public safety to be made an explicit consideration in all decisions and the denial of bail for those previously convicted of the most serious offences.

And a new offence of breach of bail, punishable with imprisonment, will be introduced to tighten up the enforcement of bail conditions.

Nick Herbert MP said public confidence has been undermined by bail conditions being routinely breached by suspects, and stressed, "It is time to tighten the bail laws and put public safety first."
