Winchester & Chandler's Ford MP Steve Brine has announced his support for the Lighter Later campaign, which will lead to lighter, safer evenings.
Steve said: “Lighter evenings would mean safer roads, more jobs and a better quality of life for the constituents of Winchester & Chandler’s Ford. It will also aid our drive to reduce Winchester's carbon footprint.
"Every year, we waste hundreds of hours of daylight by sleeping through the morning light."
“Lighter Later is a campaign to shift one hour of light from the morning to the evening where we can actually use it,” said campaign manager Daniel Vockins.
On 3rd December, The Daylight Saving Bill will be going to the House of Commons where MPs will debate whether or not the UK should make the shift. A majority of UK citizens support the move according to polls.
The bill calls for the government to conduct a cross-departmental cost-benefit analysis of the clock change. Only if the benefits are confirmed, will a three-year trial then be enacted.
10:10’s Lighter Later campaign has been backing the move and represents a coalition of bodies from RoSPA (The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents) through to the Lawn Tennis Association.
Steve added: “As the latest research shows, this low-cost, easily-implemented change has the potential to make us safer, happier and healthier."
He signalled his support for the Private Members Bill brought by Conservative MP Rebecca Harris and pledged to attend the debate and vote in favour of the Bill on 3rd December.
