Michele Ingerslev launched Final Straw Winchester in January, having been inspired by the sustainability work of Land Rover BAR and 1851 Trust, where she works part-time.
Michele said: WStraws are used for an average time of 20 minutes before being thrown away ending up in landfill and ultimately our seas. Once in the sea, the plastic straws break down into micro-plastics causing harm to marine life who ingest them; the micro-plastics then enter the food chain.
"I'm asking local businesses to stop automatically offering their customers straws and if they do ask for one, consider swapping to an alternative such as a paper straw, vegware straw, bamboo straw or a stainless steel straw."
Steve Brine MP said: "Final Straw Winchester is a fantastic campaign, and that is backed up by just how fast this has taken off.
"We really hit it off, and Michele has been an inspiration in getting local businesses to pledge to stop using single-use plastic straws. We all know by now just how harmful plastics are to our oceans, where they sadly end up, and her recent 'straw amnesty' was a huge success. I am delighted to give Michele my complete backing and will support her in getting Winchester to make a real difference."
"We are currently making plans to further promote this positive campaign, which is the right way to affect real, sustainable change."
