Winchester Working Men's Housing Society welcomed Steve Brine MP to its Fulflood base on Friday 13th April.
The Society, which has charitable aims, provides 92 homes for low cost social renting, carrying on the work begun by its founders in 1912. Chief Executive, Sally Moger, was delighted to show Steve inside one of these historic houses, which is currently undergoing refurbishment between tenancies.
Sally explained that the Society lets housing to local people who are not able to afford to suitably house their families by buying a home in the area, or by renting from a private landlord at market rent levels. The volunteer Committee of Management also tasks Sally and her team to maintain and look after the 82 historic houses and 10 flats, to ensure the Society can continue to serve the local community for many years to come.
Mr Brine also visited the Society for its Centenary celebrations in 2012, and Society Chairman, Richard Steel, said "We are grateful to have Steve's support and interest for our work. It is a continual challenge to offer the right sort of housing for Winchester people, at a truly affordable rent, and we appreciate having a voice in Westminster."
Steve Brine said: "I was delighted to go back and visit the Society but the centenary celebrations in 2012 only seem like yesterday. This is a fantastic scheme and there's something so perfect about real affordable housing in the heart of one of the most expensive parts of our city. The Society is something our city is rightly proud of."
