Thornden Secondary School in Chandler's Ford is one of the best schools in the country and it had a visit from local MP, Steve Brine, this morning who wanted to see for himself its progress.
Mr Brine met with Headteacher Su Whelan and visited large parts of the campus meeting students and staff and sitting in on parts of lessons. He also sent time in the school canteen, meeting catering staff and hearing about the healthy eating menu choices.
Thornden is ranked 'Outstanding' by Ofsted and has around 1400 pupils. It is an Academy school.
Steve said; "I always enjoy my visits to Thornden because it really is an example of excellence right across the board. It has a really nice feel and there’s a calm about the place which aids good learning. Su Whelan has taken it to the next level since arriving as Head and it was extremely interesting to hear about the food choices students have and how the school is working with us in Government to face up to the obesity challenge.
"It was also a chance to chat a little about plans, in their infancy at the moment, to form a Multi-Academy Trust with nearby feeder school Hiltingbury Juniors. I think that partnership promises a great deal, in terms of successful transition at Year 6/7 as one example, and I look forward to seeing plans develop during this academic year."
