In addition to an appearance with Kay Burley on Sky News, and taking in Ministerial speeches, he found time to meet with Breast Cancer Care, Age UK, Performing Right Society, Parkinsons UK and MacMillan.
Speaking from the train on his return to Winchester, Steve said: “This year was a really useful Conference, and was topped off with an excellent speech given by David Cameron, where he reiterated the Big Society, tackling the huge deficit we have been left and the hard work being done by the Coalition.
“I had a crammed diary, and it was great to meet with so many groups, and see so many local faces in Birmingham.”
Over 12,000 people attended this year’s conference, which culminated in David Cameron’s Leader’s Speech.
Steve said: “I think David Cameron showed once again today why he is top of the tree in British politics right now. His passion for the Government's mission to deal with this deficit shines through but so does the zeal to reform welfare, schools and the NHS.
"People in the South as everywhere should be clear, this is a Prime Minister determined to make society stronger and put us back in control of our lives.
"This country is in one hell of a mess and we saw today a Prime Minister right at the top of his game utterly focused on leading in the national interest.”
Speaking directly to the British public in a re-affirmation of his big idea of the Big Society, he said: “Your country needs you.”
The Prime Minister also made the case for a redefined approach to fairness - supporting people out of poverty and not trapping them in dependency. He said: “For too long we have measured success in tackling poverty by the size of the cheque we give people. We say let's measure our success by the chance we give."
He also restated the case for deficit reduction, pointing out that delaying action would cost Britain more. He declared: “It means that after years of cuts not only would the national debt still be growing... the problem would still be getting worse and as a result the cuts would be bigger not smaller."
Steve added: “There were some really exciting debates to be had at the fringe meetings, and the atmosphere between colleagues and members was fantastic- there was a real buzz about the place.
“Now, though, it’s back to what it’s all about, working hard in the constituency over the weekend before the House returns next week.”
