Kevin Gover joined Steve at his new constituency office on Stockbridge Road to discuss the new working co-operative, called Winchester Today. The online radio station also provides a news website and a monthly community newspaper, with a pledge that as a company limited by guarantee, any surplus funds will be used to better the service, and will stay in the city.
Kevin said: “One of our ‘promises of performance’ is that we will offer meaningful training to young people in the Winchester District. We will build a studio and make it open to primary and secondary schools to encourage speaking and listening skills. This way of exploring communication is a proven confidence builder.
“We also want to help the journalists, presenters and actors of the future aged 16-25. In this category we hope to give one-to-one training to at least 150 people over the next three years- and especially to those who would not be able to afford it otherwise at college or university. We’re calling this Project: Alfie150.”
Steve added:” It was a pleasure to meet up with Kevin again today, and I am very excited to welcome Winchester Today to the city. As an ex-radio guy myself I love what they are trying to do with this project. Rules being rules at the moment, the majority of their funding must come through donations, grants and sponsorship. Just £18 would help Project: Alfie150 run a training session, and I am delighted to help this excellent group publicise their cause.”
