Steve Brine has welcomed the creation of Great British Railways which will integrate the railways and deliver passenger-focused travel with simpler, modern fares and reliable services.

The Secretary of State for Transport, Grant Shapps, has today unveiled the Williams-Shapps Plan for Rail which will be key in protecting affordable walk-on fares and season tickets.

The Secretary of State has said; “As we build back better from coronavirus we have the chance to do things differently in this country. We are a Government which profoundly believes in the future of the railway and Great British Railways will help to secure its recovery. By ending the fragmentation, increasing accountability, making journeys easier and more comfortable, and by putting passengers first we can ensure that the system thrives for decades to come, and of course, that the trains really do run on time.”

Shapps has also confirmed that this will include rolling out new flexible season tickets and making significant roll-outs of pay as you go.

Following the announcement Steve said; “I know many of my constituents will be really excited at the prospects of this new plan, especially the rolling out of flexible season tickets. This has a been a key issue for me and many of my constituents who have asked for such.

“The past year has changed the way we work permanently and it’s right the railway responds.”

Hampshire Chronicle column - Farewell

Thursday, 30 May, 2024
My final column is perhaps more reflective than usual but I hope you will forgive me as I prepare to formally step down as Parliament is formally Dissolved ahead of the General Election on July 4. Fourteen years ago, in May 2010, I was first elected as our MP.
