During the hour long session, he covered a wide range subjects from the flagging economy, the tragedy of Baby P in Haringey and the NHS to Afghanistan, knife crime and population control.
Mr Cameron said; “The point of these meetings is to hear directly from people about their opinions and concerns, I enjoyed meeting people here in Winchester and answering their questions.”
Steve Brine, prospective Conservative parliamentary candidate for Winchester organised the event. He said; “It was a real honour to have David here; I hope people found it enjoyable and informative. The extended applause at the end of the event was really warm and genuine. I thought it was really refreshing in this modern media age to see someone who wants to be Prime Minister, unscripted just answering questions straight from local people.”
A pupil from St Bede’s School in Hyde asked Mr Cameron which football team he supported, to which he replied Aston Villa. The boy went onto tell David Cameron he was a Chelsea fan!
Mr Brine raised the vitally important local issue of centrally imposed housing targets with the Conservative leader which he said were “holding Winchester to ransom”.
Speaking after the event the Conservative candidate said; “We desperately need new homes to alleviate the pressure on local housing lists and to allow those who have grown up in Winchester to stay near their families and friends but centrally imposed housing targets are holding us to ransom and disempowering local people. I asked David Cameron if a Conservative Government would abolish central targets and return these key decisions to elected local politicians and was delighted he said yes!”
The event was broadcast live on the internet.
