Winchester City Council is providing residents with vital support and information on how to cope during the recession.

As many people start to feel the pinch, the Conservative-led city council in Winchester is highlight the full range of benefits and services available to people in need.

A new page on the council’s website www.winchester.gov.uk/recessionadvice provides information on subjects such as benefits, housing, family support, and finding work.

The council is keen to show people that they are not alone and that there are plenty of ways in which the council and local organisations might be able to help.

The City Council also supports local organisations such as the Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB) which is also on hand to help anyone who needs advice.

Citizens Advice is an independent service providing free, confidential, impartial advice on a wide range of subjects. CAB staff can work with residents to sort out debt worries and identify benefits that they may be entitled to. They can help with housing and employment problems, or deal with queries about consumer or tax issues. They can also advise on legal matters, family problems and other personal matters too.

Cllr Tony Coates, Portfolio Holder for Housing, said: "There are many ways in which people might be able to get vital help. It’s always worth contacting the council or your local CAB office to see if you qualify for any additional support, whether it be in the form of benefits, housing, grants or just general advice. Don’t be afraid to ask whether you qualify for help, especially if you are struggling to make ends meet."

Steve Brine, Prospective Winchester MP added; “This is exactly the sort of practical help we need right now and while the scope of a district council such as Winchester is clearly limited when compared to the might of Government, it is vital local people know what is rightfully theirs and how they can access help.”

Residents who do not have access to the internet, but who would like advice, can contact the council on 01962 840 222 or visit the main council reception in Colebrook Street. Alternatively, free internet access is available at the Winchester Discovery Centre and the City Council’s local offices.
