Iain Duncan Smith visited Trinity Winchester this morning on the invitation of Prospective Winchester MP Steve Brine

The former Conservative leader who now heads the Centre for Social Justice, saw the new building at Durngate Place and met with staff and service users.

Chief Executive Michelle Gardner explained the work of the charity, which moved to its present site from Fulflood almost exactly one year ago, and outlined some of the challenges it faces.  They particularly discussed the dual addictions of alcohol and drug abuse and heard Conservative plans to tackle their twin threat if the party wins the General Election.

David Cameron has indicated he will establish a Department for Social Justice if he becomes Prime Minister which would put Mr Duncan Smith’s work at the CSJ at the heart of Government and form the bedrock of his plans to overcome some of the country’s most deep-rooted social problems.

Iain Duncan Smith said; “I am hugely impressed with the Trinity Centre, it is a first-rate building which is quite rightly packed with services and support mechanism to help some of the most vulnerable people in this city.  From the art work to the medical services available they are so much more than a soup kitchen and I am confident they are really helping people who need a leg-up and a chance to fulfil their potential.  It’s good to be back in Winchester, especially to support Steve Brine who I know cares deeply about the proposals my Centre for Social Justice has put forward and I hope we can get him into Parliament so he can help put them into practice.”

Steve Brine added; “Iain’s work on the social agenda is something that attracted me to stand for the Conservatives at this election.  So many of our problems as a country come as a result of family and societal breakdown and Winchester is far from immune from many of them.  I hope we get a clear result in May at the election and give Iain’s ideas a chance; he will have my support all the way as Winchester’s MP.”
