The Winchester & Chandler's Ford MP was one of hundreds of local people who took part in the service, which fell as the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity began at the weekend.
As well as reading Isaiah 6:1-8, Steve, who was with his young family, was able to meet up with Basics Bank Director, Moira Knapman, as well as new Chairman Jean Hart and a number of volunteers at a special tea-party held in the Cathedral beforehand.
Speaking afterwards, Steve said: "Ten years ago, not that many people had even heard of food banks, but I am so full of praise for our dedicated local team who work with clients who find themselves, often very suddenly, in desperate need.
"I have long-supported Winchester Basics Bank, and I am so very grateful for those who use my Stockbridge Road office as a collection point. As WBB say, at heart they are very much a Christian organisation, and I was very proud to be a part of this fantastic reception and service. It was one of the most energising events I have attended during my time as the local MP."
The event also heard from the Mayor, Cllr Ernie Jeffs, Preacher Canon John Mumford (National Leader of the Vineyard Movement) and Revd Roly Riem, Vice Dean of Winchester Cathedral, while the work of Winchester Street Pastors was also highlighted.
The Unity Service was organised by Christ Church, Winchester and Churches Together, Winchester.
