Local MP Steve Brine has welcomed the announcement of £6,086,445 of new funding in Hampshire to tackle potholes.
In total £17,596,118 of additional funding for the county has been announced for this year, on top of the annual roads maintenance budget.
Over three million potholes will be filled in across England with funding from the £168 million Pothole Fund, announced in the 2014 Budget. This is part of more than £24 billion which will be spent on England's roads between 2010 and 2021 – the biggest investment in our roads since the 1970s.
Winchester & Chandler's Ford MP Steve Brine said: "This is good news for all of us, drivers and cyclists. Over £6m of new funding will go a long way to dealing with the menace of potholes and ridding them from our roads. The problem has been particularly bad since the February floods which ripped up road surfaces with worrying ease.
"On the wider point, investing in Britain's roads and infrastructure is a key part of our long-term economic plan – and this is just one part of that. As the Prime Minister said when he was speaking in the area last week, Hampshire County Council made a strong bid for our share of this new money so it's good to see it come our way for once."
