A number of local businesses, local government representatives, educational establishments and local people joined Steve Brine and the Green candidate Michael Wilks, as they heard excellent presentations from Sarah Bird from Timebanking and Ian Wilkey from Food Up Front.
Timebanking is an initiative that started in Japan, and now has a presence in over 300 communities in the UK. It involves swapping 'hours', seeing people and their skills and interests as community assets to be shared around, regardless of age or ability.
Ian Wilkey, from Food Up Front, described the benefits of community gardens, and highlighted how their use can revamp neglected areas, as well as providing valuable community bonding. He cited the example of Elderfield, in Otterbourne, which has developed an asset which as well as providing local produce, also helps with our food security.
Speaking afterwards, Steve said: "It was great to see the truly key people for the area here this morning, including Stephen Carville from Peter Symonds and Rachel Aron, the fantastic chair of Stanmore Community Association. The workshop, which is continuing throughout the day, will I am sure be inspired by the excellent presentations from Sarah Bird and Ian Wilkey today."
