Steve Brine teamed up with Google and Parent Zone on Friday 10th February as the Internet Legends tour visited Merdon Junior School in Chandler's Ford.
The tour, delivered by Google and Parent Zone is an online safety initiative that aims to teach primary school children practical tips for staying safe online in an interactive, fun and memorable way. Children are taught four key points, dubbed the Legends Code, in order to make their online lives safe as well as enjoyable.
The Four Pillars of the Legends Code are:
1) Think Before You Share.
2) Protect Your Stuff.
3) Check It's For Real.
4) Respect Each Other.
The assembly is designed to engage children as much as possible by using colourful lighting, sound and visuals. Children are also given foam fingers which they use throughout the assembly to further engage in the messages the presentation promotes. After learning the code, the children become 'Internet Legends' and are encouraged to spread the Legends Code to their family and friends.
Parent Zone CEO Vicki Shotbolt said: "Working with Google on this project has enabled us to support many more primary schools with messages that are vital for children of this age. We know from our work with schools and with parents that helping children to become confident and safe online is an essential life skill and it is important to prepare them for a time when they will be independently exploring online."
Steve Brine took an active part in the assembly, explaining as a dad how important internet safety is. He said: "This was a brilliant event and the kids clearly loved it. I think we all learnt a lot about being safe and smart online and it was especially useful for as a father of two who know their way around the internet better than me.
"Google and ParentZone deserve great credit for the Legends programme and we're extra grateful they decided to come to Chandler's Ford. School assemblies at Merdon will never be the same again!"
The Internet Legends tour is now in its second year and has visited over 50 schools across the UK since its inception in February 2016.
