Steve Brine joined a large group in Balaka Indian Restaurant in Weeke on Thursday 21st March as they spent the evening chatting over delicious curry.

The Winchester MP had been asked to join the men’s curry club from Christ Church Winchester to chat about his faith and politics.

Speaking afterwards, Steve said: “What a fantastic evening, and it was great to be able to talk about the issues of the day (ok, Brexit!) in such a warm and respectful manner. As in the country right now, we heard a range of robust views, but the best thing about the evening was that it was done in such a calm and measured way, where we could all see there is far more that unites us.

“It wasn’t all Brexit, of course, and it was a privilege to be able to discuss my faith and also how we work together cross-party in the House far more that newspaper headlines and a 30-minute session of PMQs each week would ever demonstrate.”

Paul Thomson, Communications Manager at Christ Church Winchester said, “Our church is keen to work out Jesus’ commands to love another in all aspects of our lives, and our Men’s group meet to regularly over a curry to discuss how faith is applied in all aspects of life.  It was a great evening that packed out the restaurant, with a wide-range of questions asked representing the broad spectrum of political views held by members of the church.  Our thanks to Steve for honouring his commitment to come along at such a busy time and for answering the questions openly, and to everyone who came for being welcoming and accepting of each other’s views. Also, our thanks to Balaka for providing a great meal as always.“

Hampshire Chronicle column - Farewell

Thursday, 30 May, 2024
My final column is perhaps more reflective than usual but I hope you will forgive me as I prepare to formally step down as Parliament is formally Dissolved ahead of the General Election on July 4. Fourteen years ago, in May 2010, I was first elected as our MP.
