All-Party Group for Breast Cancer

THIS PAGE IS BEING UPDATED

Steve Brine co-chaired the All-Party Breast Cancer Group for the duration of the 2010-2015 Parliament.

He worked alongside (now retired) Lib Dem Annette Brooke and Labour MP Sharon Hodgson who keept the issue high on the political agenda.

The Group, one of the best supported in Parliament, offers the opportunity for members to hear directly from people affected by breast cancer and provides advice and information about national and constituency issues relating to breast cancer.  It also supports members to ask questions and participate in debates and Parliamentary meetings on breast cancer issues.

Meetings are held throughout the year where MP and Peers can get updated on latest developments in the field and put questions to leading experts.  The group meet annually with the Prime Minister at No.10 to update him on its work.

It is supported formally by Breast Cancer NOW (formerly Breakthrough Breast Cancer and Breast Cancer Campaign) and supported by the other leading charity in the area, Breast Cancer Care.

Steve handed over the chairmanship of the group to new leadership in June 2015 as he takes up a role working with the Secretary of State at the Department of Health.

Age is just a number - Spring 2013
Spring 2013 saw the group report on a full-scale inquiry into older people with breast cancer. It heard from a range of first hand sources, including older breast cancer patients and their families, partners and carers. The Inquiry also spoke with healthcare and social care professionals, cancer care commissioners, the Department of Health, academic researchers and voluntary organisations to ensure a thorough understanding of the current situation.

The Inquiry reported on 17 July 2013 with Age is just a number; a significant look at the issue of older people with breast cancer.  You can download the full report here and read the progress update from early 2015 here.

Films
Watch the short-film produced by Breast Cancer Care (BCC) titled Facing breast cancer together, made in the House of Commons at the end of 2013.  Features Steve Brine and his co-chair Annette Brooke MP as well as a number of survivors who talk passionately about the fight against secondary breast cancer and 40 years of BCC.

Haven Breast Cancer
Steve has long supported the charity, Haven.  See more about Haven Wessex and why the 'Tampon Tax' came good for this superb (now local) charity.
