Cala Homes has applied to the city council for permission to build 2,000 homes on farmland on the northern edge of the city. It is their second attempt at developing the land having an earlier effort rebuffed by planners.
The detail of the plans has been well-publicised with public exhibitions in Winchester in October. The biggest change has seen the re-routing of Andover Road through the development which will also have shops, a school, health and leisure facilities.
Prospective Winchester MP Steve Brine commented as the application was lodged with Winchester City Council; "No ifs, not butts, I remain opposed to this development. As I said to the Save Barton Farm rally earlier this year, Winchester is bursting at the seams and it is clearer than ever to me that our city cannot take another 2000 houses on this site. That is an inconvenient truth for some but it remains the case."
