The election hustings moved to the subject of business today with an event hosted by Chamber of Commerce.

The newly created Hampshire Chamber of Commerce invited all five Winchester Parliamentary Candidates to a special ‘Question Time’ event on Tuesday 27 April.

Prospective Conservative MP Steve Brine was joined by his Labour, UKIP, Lib Dem and English Democrat opponents for the meeting, held at the Wessex Hotel in central Winchester.  It was chaired by well-known local businessman Khalid Aziz.

Speaking after the event Steve Brine said; “Another good event and big thanks must go to John Harrocks and his team for bringing us together in this way.  So much of this election campaign on the national media has been TV debates and personalities so it was good to once again here talk about the issues.  There are of course, no bigger than the economy and business which will lead us out of recession if handled by a sympathetic Government.

“At the end of the day it is not the state that creates sustainable employment, it is business people like those we met this evening.  Small businesses are especially important to the UK’s economic recovery and to tackling unemployment so that makes Winchester especially important in my book because SME’s drive the local economy and create the jobs.  Government can help boost enterprise by lowering tax rates, reducing regulation and improving workers’ skills but we have to ultimately create the right conditions for business to grow and prosper.

“I was useful for me, having spent many years in business already in my career, to bring those experiences to the chamber members present and set out some of the excellent enterprise initiatives in our Conservative manifesto.”
