A second national lockdown would not be the best strategy in combatting the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, nor enjoy his support Steve Brine MP has told the House of Commons.

The MP was speaking after the Prime Minister Boris Johnson, had outlined further social restrictions to combat the Coronavirus pandemic. All hospitality, including restaurants and pubs, must close at 10pm from this Thursday, after a large rise in cases in some parts of the country.

Steve Brine told the PM that, not only was another national lockdown not the correct approach in his view, but it was also important that any new measure must have broad public support.

And he asked; "Does the Prime Minister agree that all these restrictions on our constituents’ lives require their ongoing consent, and that it is incumbent on the Government, the scientists who advise him and Parliament to stress-test these decisions and, crucially, the evidence that lies behind them?”

The PM agreed, confirming in his response that Parliament would be much further involved in any new measures imposed; “It would be greatly to the advantage of the debate and the country for these questions to be discussed in the House in the way that I have outlined.”

Hampshire Chronicle column - Farewell

Thursday, 30 May, 2024
My final column is perhaps more reflective than usual but I hope you will forgive me as I prepare to formally step down as Parliament is formally Dissolved ahead of the General Election on July 4. Fourteen years ago, in May 2010, I was first elected as our MP.
