And if so, what will Doctor Who do? BT launch consultation on future of iconic phone boxes.

British Telecom is proposing the removal of 43 phone boxes in the Winchester district, as part of a national review.

Winchester City Council, as the local planning authority, is coordinating a consultation on the issue and will collate any responses from councillors, parishes and residents.

The phone boxes are located at sites spanning the whole district, with many of them in rural areas. A full list can be found at www.winchester.gov.uk/BT

Prospective Winchester MP, Steve Brine, said: “"If they do disappear I think that's a shame.  It seems as if another part of England is disappearing and we have lost so much our identity in recent years, especially in rural areas. I do think that we would be careful to remember that although phone boxes are not well used these days, if you are in trouble or you've broken down on a remote rural road with no mobile signal or battery left, that phone box could just be your lifeline."

Council Leader George Beckett said: “These phone boxes are often an important resource for local people who don’t have easy access to private landlines or mobile phones. If anyone feels strongly about the subject they should respond to the consultation and make their voice heard.”

The online survey is available to complete online at www.winchester.gov.uk/BT

People can alternatively write in to the Council at City Offices, Colebrook Street, Winchester, SO23 9LJ. They must specifically identify which phone box their comments relate to.
