Local MP, Steve Brine, has attended a reception in the Houses of Parliament hosted by the Sixth Form Colleges Association to launch their new collection of works : "Sixth Form Matters'.

This new book, featuring contributors, including Dylan Wiliam and Andreas Schleicher, from the United States to New Zealand, focuses on why sixth form education is so important, what a wonderful experience it is for three quarters of a million young people every year - and that change is the only constant.

At a time when the government’s 16-19 policies are focussed on technical education and the skills agenda, the report draws attention to the pathway chosen by the majority of young people at the age of 16: sixth form education.

With every sixth form college judged good or outstanding by Ofsted, with a growing number of colleges playing an important role in system leadership, and with colleges increasing their capacity to accommodate growing student populations, it is timely to recognise and celebrate what an excellent sixth form education looks like and to consider the issues of today and tomorrow.

Steve said after the event : "Glad to attend the event with my friend, Rachel Hopkins MP for Luton South - who leads the Sixth Form Colleges APPG. We're working cross-party to protect student choice as I attempt to land a debate around the future of BTEC qualifications."

The report is available to read here.

Hampshire Chronicle column - Farewell

Thursday, 30 May, 2024
My final column is perhaps more reflective than usual but I hope you will forgive me as I prepare to formally step down as Parliament is formally Dissolved ahead of the General Election on July 4. Fourteen years ago, in May 2010, I was first elected as our MP.
