The Justice Select Committee held an evidence session on the Ministry of Justice's criminal legal aid, relating to price competitive tendering, on Tuesday 11th June.

The Committee has received a large number of representations on the proposals in the Government's consultation paper on 'Transforming legal aid: delivering a more credible and efficient system', including many copies of responses made to the Ministry of Justice.

They heard from a range of witnesses in the Boothroyd Room in Portcullis House, including Lucy Scott-Moncrieff, President of the Law Society, Michael Turner QC, Chair of the Criminal Bar Association and Maura McGowan QC, Chair of the Bar Council.

Committee member Steve Brine said: "This was an extremely high profile session which generated wide interest both in Parliament and outside. We were able to run through the proposals in the MoJ consultation in great detail and test the PCT ideas being put forward.

"The committee will now almost certainly move onto questioning The Lord Chancellor where we will continue to put the key questions being raised by constituents right across this country."
