Local media champions celebrated at Number 10

Winchester and Chandler's Ford MP, Steve Brine, welcomed two champions of the local media scene to Number 10 Downing Street for a special reception hosted by the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport.

Liz Kavanagh, from Winchester Magazine, and Kevin Gover, from Winchester Today, were nominated as 'Local Media Champions' by the MP.

The event was organised by Downing Street to promote the role and importance of local media within communities. 

MPs from across the UK were invited to nominate a Local Media Champion and Steve proposed both Liz and Kevin. Liz is the editor of the Winchester Magazine who cover local people and campaigns in it's bi-monthly edtions - Liz also hosts the biggest Facebook following of any press account in Winchester!

Liz said : "A great honour to attend a reception for local media champions in the company of Kevin Gover of Winchester Today and Steve Brine MP. We might not be a major news publisher, but we’re absolutely committed to sharing all the positives about Winchester far and wide."

Kevin runs Winchester Today, which offer a local spin on the news both in print and via the Winchester Today radio show, he added : "Wednesday was amazing. A day which saw me recognised by Culture Secretary Lucy Frazer at the DCMS as a Local Media Champion."

Following the reception Steve said : "A truly fabulous evening in a very special place as No.10 celebrated local community media champions. Winchester and Chandler's Ford is so lucky to have a whole host of local media specialists and Liz and Kevin have done a fantastic job to beat the drum of local press."
