Wessex Cancer Trust, a charity dedicated to providing free and local emotional and practical support for anyone living with cancer throughout the region, hosted a visit from Steve Brine, MP for Winchester and Chandler’s Ford, who pledged his support to the way the charity is developing its services to directly meet changing local need.

Steve visited the charity’s Chandler’s Ford Support Centre where he talked to clients who had taken part in a Tai Chi class and toured the centre’s counselling and therapy facilities. He then met CEO Cait Allen who briefed him on the major research Wessex Cancer Trust is carrying out to find out what local people living with any type of cancer and at any stage need most in terms of cancer support.

The results will put the views and experiences of people affected by cancer at the heart of shaping cancer support services in Hampshire, Isle of Wight, Dorset and Wiltshire.

Steve said: “The recently published NHS Long Term Plan has a strong focus on diagnosis, meaning more people will be living with cancer and for longer.  As these numbers continue to increase, so will the demand for support services.  In light of this changing environment, I wholeheartedly support the way in which Wessex Cancer Trust is specifically asking local people what they most need and want, to make sure they continue to receive the best possible support from the charity.”

To have your say on the future of cancer support services in your area, visit http://www.bournemouth.ac.uk/wct-feedback before 6 May.

Steve was, until April 2019, the Cancer Minister working within Government.

Hampshire Chronicle column - Farewell

Thursday, 30 May, 2024
My final column is perhaps more reflective than usual but I hope you will forgive me as I prepare to formally step down as Parliament is formally Dissolved ahead of the General Election on July 4. Fourteen years ago, in May 2010, I was first elected as our MP.
