The Member of Parliament for Winchester and Chandler's Ford, Steve Brine MP, took his family along to a matinee of 'Me and My Girl' at the Theatre Royal after a special invitation by Play to the Crowd, who operate the City's theatre.
The amateur production of Me and My Girl followed the book and lyrics by L. Arthur Rose and Douglas Furber. Music by Noel Gay. Contributions by Mike Ockrent. Book revised by Stephen Fry.
The production starred Matt McGrath (Jekyll in Jekyll and Hyde) as Bill Snibson and Olivia Conroy (Rita in Made in Dagenham) as Sally.
Bill Snibson, a Lambeth costermonger, is revealed to be the new Earl of Hareford and his newly-discovered aristocratic relations are horrified. Bringing him to Hareford Hall, they attempt to educate Bill into the ways of the gentry and to separate him from his cockney girlfriend Sally. The result? Chaos of the most comical kind!
Speaking afterwards Steve Brine said; "What a stunning performance of Me and My Girl this afternoon at Theatre Royal Winchester by the Winchester Musicals and Opera Society. Thank you for inviting us along."
