Winchester resident, Michael Blakstad, organised a special seminar at the Winchester ARC on Media versus Dementia, which was introduced by Steve Brine MP and attended by scientists, broadcasters, care providers, dementia charities and technologists.
Scientific research has established the link between the use of media to trigger memories thought lost, and to improve both cognition and wellbeing for people with dementia. In light of that emerging evidence, Michael’s Media versus dementia initiative promotes a “walled garden” approach of mixed media personalised to an individual with dementia, therefore, shows there are grounds for optimism in this area.
The local MP and Chair of the Health and Social Care Select Committee, Steve Brine, spoke at the event welcoming Michael's initiative describing it as “something to behold”. The MP went on to draw relevance from his committee's dementia report and prevention inquiry.
