Winchester MP Steve Brine was joined by local police as they seek to tackle a spate of anti-social behaviour in a city centre street.

Residents in Middle Brook Street contacted their MP after reports over many months of doors being kicked, banged on and defaced. Doorbells are rung, including Ring Door Bells disturbing people not event at home, and waste food stuffs have been smeared on doors.

Steve Brine was joined by PC Mark Jeffrey from Hampshire Police and the pair spent time speaking with residents about their experiences.

Steve says; “This may sound like pretty low-level anti-social behaviour activity, and it is, but it’s deeply unpleasant for the residents it affects. We spoke with residents with small children who are disturbed at bedtime and elderly residents who are understandably frightened when someone thrashes on their door late at night or in the early hours. One told us she jumps out of her skin when it happens and she’s sitting literally the other side of the front door in what are small terraced houses.

“Credit to the new neighbourhood policing approach being taken by the police and the zero-tolerance they have to this kind of nuisance. It’s not amusing, it’s childish and you will be found out is the clear message.”

Hampshire Police are seeking to get a new Neighbourhood Watch group for Middle Brook Street up and running and, together with Steve Brine, are lobbying Winchester City Council to get CCTV installed at the top end of the street where most ASB is taking place.

Hampshire Chronicle column - Farewell

Thursday, 30 May, 2024
My final column is perhaps more reflective than usual but I hope you will forgive me as I prepare to formally step down as Parliament is formally Dissolved ahead of the General Election on July 4. Fourteen years ago, in May 2010, I was first elected as our MP.
