MP joins hundreds for mass cycle ride in Winchester

Steve Brine and his son William, joined hundreds of constituents took to their bikes to show support for a greener way of getting around Winchester.

People filled the streets with cycles on Saturday morning, when Cycle Winchester, a local community organisation campaigning to make Winchester better by bike, organised a fifth Mass Ride.

Riders joined from eight pick-up points across the city, converging at North Walls for a circuit of the city centre. The ride welcomes riders of all ages, with experienced cyclists marshalling the group for safety.

Speaking afterwards Steve said; "It was an absolute was a joy to be part of the mass cycle, this morning with my son and hundreds of others. A brilliant ride through our ancient city streets this morning ride through our ancient city streets."

The event culminated in front of the offices of Hampshire County Council, where county councillor Dominic Hiscock, as unofficial town crier, proclaimed the Winchester Cycling Charter.

Since its launch earlier this year, the Charter has received wide support from local organisations including a host of the city’s top retailers, and institutions such as the cathedral, Royal Hampshire County Hospital and university, as well as more than 600 residents

My final column is perhaps more reflective than usual but I hope you will forgive me as I prepare to formally step down as Parliament is formally Dissolved ahead of the General Election on July 4. Fourteen years ago, in May 2010, I was first elected as our MP.
