2021 Remembrance

Winchester fell silent this morning for Remembrance Sunday 2021.

Local MP, Steve Brine, laid a wreath out Winchester Cathedral alongside the Lord-Lieutenant of Hampshire and Mayor of Winchester. It was the tenth time he has done so.

Prior to the Act of Remembrance, a special service was held inside the Cathedral led by the Dean of Winchester and Acting Bishop. Lt Col The Reverend Nicholas Mercer, Rector at Bolton Abbey, delivered the sermon.

Steve said; "After all the noise, and nonsense, of political debate it is truly humbling and very moving to see everyone stop in their tracks and put everything into perspective. The men and women of our armed forces, which I am getting to see closer than ever this year through my part in the Armed Forces Parliamentary Scheme, really are the best of the best and they give everything so we may remain free. We will always remember them and their sacrifice."

Hampshire Chronicle column - Farewell

Thursday, 30 May, 2024
My final column is perhaps more reflective than usual but I hope you will forgive me as I prepare to formally step down as Parliament is formally Dissolved ahead of the General Election on July 4. Fourteen years ago, in May 2010, I was first elected as our MP.
