Speaking in the House of Commons today, Steve Brine asked the Prime Minister why there appears to be a north-south divide in the current Coronavirus pandemic in the UK.
Rates in southern England have remained relatively low, while they have shot up in northern cities such as Liverpool and Manchester in recent weeks.
Steve asked the PM “Given the fact that we obviously have a north-south split in our country right now—there is no judgment or blame in that, and there should not be; it is just a stark fact—what is the Prime Minister’s opinion on that and what information has he been given by the experts as to why?”
The Prime Minister replied, saying that “the reality is that the disease is rising across the country” and added that many European countries has seen similar patterns of geographically specific outbreaks.
Steve also welcomed the PM’s stated approach that another national lockdown would not be the answer, as some have called for, as it would not be fair on areas such as Winchester with currently low rates.
The PM agreed saying “ The sensible thing is to tackle it in a local way, which is what we are doing.”
