Following a statement from the Home Secretary Theresa May, in which she announced that the deportation of Abu Qutada to Jordan could finally be arranged, the Winchester & Chandler's Ford MP highlighted the need for a British Bill of Rights, which he has long backed and which was in the Conservative manifesto at the 2010 General Election, and a strengthening of the UK's Supreme Court.
He said: "I warmly welcome the Home Secretary's strong statement. Has this whole sorry episode convinced her and the entire Government that, as others have said, what we need is a British Bill of Rights declared senior to Strasbourg, and a supreme court over the road that lives up to its name?"
In reply, Theresa May agreed that the Bill of Rights was a Conservative commitment, and added: "What we have done in government is put in place a commission to look at a British Bill of Rights, and it will report in due course."
Speaking afterwards, Steve said: "I am pleased that a commission is currently looking at this, and recent events for me have only highlighted just how urgent we must now take this. Key for me is that it must supersede anything that Strasbourg tries to impose, and I am very much looking forward to the findings of the commission."
