Local MP, Steve Brine, paid a special visit to a Chandler's Ford school today as they prepare to celebrate a very big birthday.
Sherborne House School, in Lakewood Road, marks 90 years since its foundation on January 19 and is a much valued part of the local community.
Steve received a special tour from Head Boy, Phillip, and Head Girl, Adishri, before catching up with Headteacher Mark Reach.
He says; "It's always fun to visit Sherborne House but this was extra special given the occasion. It was also useful to speak with Mark about the proposals being muted, by the Opposition, to end the charitable status of independent schools which would put VAT on school fees. This was be a false economy in my opinion and pose a very real threat to many schools so it was important to discuss this.
"The policy idea, while superficially attractive with certain ‘target’ voters I am sure, would make an independent education unaffordable for many families leading to large numbers of pupils leaving for the state sector.
“We think they would risk 134,000 eligible pupils claiming their place in the state sector as a result of fee rises or school closures. Figures from the Department for Education estimate the cost of educating pupils leaving the independent sector would cost £850 million per year, with some £1.3 billion in capital spending required to provide the capacity in existing schools.
"Thanks to Phillip and Adishri for their time as well. I wish them both all the best for the future."
