This evening (Tuesday 1 March 2022) Winchester will show it's support for our friends in Ukraine with a vigil at Abbey Gardens.

Steve Brine MP will be in Westminster where the UK Government is seeking to pass into law a series of already announced sanctions to hit the Putin regime and those associated with it.

He says; "The horror of war on the edge of Europe is a horror unfolding before our eyes. Like every one of my constituents, I am stunned that we are here again and beyond angry that President Putin has plunged the world into a totally unnecessary crisis through his ethnic nationalism and aggression. Our hearts go out to the brave and frightened people of sovereign Ukraine.

"As soon as the invasion began I spoke with the Prime Minister and said our response should be coordinated, swift and fierce. To his credit, Boris Johnson has galvanised our allies and the package of sanctions, not yet complete I might add, has been extremely impressive and has my full support.

"Clearly this is a fast-moving, hour by hour, international situation and it's not helpful (or wise) for individual MPs to present a running commentary given there is so much of that from our Government.

"What I am doing as an experienced constituency MP is feeding all local opinion - on sanctions and the developing refugee situation - back to Ministers and picking up a significant volume of casework to help those in greatest need."

Hampshire Chronicle column - Farewell

Thursday, 30 May, 2024
My final column is perhaps more reflective than usual but I hope you will forgive me as I prepare to formally step down as Parliament is formally Dissolved ahead of the General Election on July 4. Fourteen years ago, in May 2010, I was first elected as our MP.
