A brand new student society has been launched at the University of Winchester which aims to elect a new Conservative MP.

Winchester Student Conservative Society (WSCS) was unveiled last weekend during the annual “Freshers Fayre” event.  The exhibition – held this year on the King Alfred Campus off Sparkford Road - is a chance for new students to find out about dozens of different groups, organisations and local businesses they can access during their time in the city.

WSCS aims to give students at the University a chance to get involved with local political campaigns as well as to enjoy social events around Winchester and surrounding areas.  The society’s President is second-year Politics student Martin Higson; “We were delighted at the response from students.  We handed out around 450 goody bags filled with free-stuff and money off vouchers for businesses in Winchester.  We already had a core group from among last year’s freshers but after Saturday we have a much stronger team and now a brand new society to put some real weight from the student population behind Steve Brine’s campaign to be Winchester’s new MP.”

Prospective Winchester MP Steve Brine added; “We were mobbed at Freshers Fair and had a really good time.  Students are no different to most other people in Winchester I meet, they want to see the back of Gordon Brown and they want to play their in making it happen.  I think everyone was surprised to see the Liberal Party waving the ‘Scrap Tuition Fees’ banner this year, especially after their recent party conference when their leader seemed to finally accept that political promises have to be paid for.  I would like to see the back of student fees as much as anyone but I cannot say with any honesty that an incoming Conservative Government could afford to get rid of them now with all the resulting damage such a move would do to our great Universities."

To join WSCS, simply email your name and contact details to: [email protected], or join the Winchester Student Conservative Society group on Facebook, which can be found via: http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=70636803238.
