Steve Brine met up with the University of Surrey alongside the Chief Executive of HHFT in Winchester on Friday 1st September as they discussed plans for a new medical school in the region.

The University of Surrey is preparing a bid for some of the new medical places announced last autumn by Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt, and as well as developing NHS partnerships across Surrey, they are also working with Hampshire hospitals to set up partnership agreements for clinical placements for medical students at Winchester and Basingstoke.

Present at the meeting were; Professor Helen Griffiths (Executive Dean, Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Surrey), Professor Kamila Hawthorne (Associate Dean Medicine/Director of Medical Education, University of Surrey), Professor David Hendon, (Chair GIC Strategy Advisory Board, University of Surrey), Dr Andrew Oswell (Director of Medical Education, Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust) and Alex Whitfield (Chief Executive, Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust).

Speaking afterwards, Steve Brine said: "This is an early and bold vision for a new medical school in our region. It was incredibly useful to learn about the bid Surrey are putting together; I look forward to seeing how it develops and will follow developments closely."
